Ban Bang Phae Drum Making Village

Located on highway number 309, about 16 kilometers from Ayutthaya, is the village of Bangsadet, which is involved in making miniature dolls, under the royal patronage of the Queen of Thailand.

The original name of this village was Ban Wattan. The village suffered extensively due to floods that paralyzed the entire economic backbone of this village. It was then that the King and the Queen visited the village and offered to establish the Court Doll Center in order to help the flood victims earn a livelihood through doll-making. The villagers were so pleased with this sympathetic and generous gesture that they renamed their village as Ban Bangsadet to express their gratitude to the king and the queen.

The scenic village of Bangsadet, is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Besides enjoying the calm and peaceful settings of this village, visitors can visit the Ban Bang Sadet Court Doll Center as well as the extremely friendly households engaged in court-doll house making and learn about the entire process of doll making. The Court Doll Project at Ban Bangsadet was started by the Queen in 1976 with the objective of providing a supplementary source of income to the villagers.

A variety of articles are made using different themes such as the prominent Thai fruits, popular Thai musical instruments, Thai houses, dolls depicting Thai lifestyle and culture, Thai children at play, etc. These dolls are lovely and worth buying as mementoes reminding you of your delightful visit to Thailand. You can purchase these clay-products either at the sermon hall of Wat Tha Sutthawat or at the Chitralada shops.
