Angthong Travel Guide:

Wat Chaiyo Worawihan

Wat Chaiyo Worawihan is one of the most prominent tourist destinations of Angthong, housing the famous ‘Phra Maha Phuttha Phim’. This second-class royal monastery is characterized by a triple-tiered roof and an impressively carved gable.

It is situated on Highway No. 32, approximately 18 kilometers from Amphoe Mueang Ang Thong, on the western banks of the Chao Phraya River.

This temple was originally a small ordinary temple constructed during the Ayutthaya period. This temple gained prominence during the reign of King Rama IV, when Somdet Phra Phutthachan, a revered monk constructed an enormous seated figure of meditating Buddha, (fondly referred to as ‘Phra Maha Phuttha Phim’) with white plaster in 1894. This image had a lap width of 5 meters and a height of 7 meters.

Later, King Rama V initiated the renovation of the temple in 1887 but unfortunately, the heavy vibrations during the construction work, caused the large Buddha image (Phra Maha Phuttha Phim) to crumple under the pressure. The king was then forced to build a large Buddha image, similar to the one at Wat Kanlayanamit, to replace the damaged one. This new Buddha image which came to be known as ‘Phra Mahaphutthaphim’ was enshrined amidst grand celebrations. The statue has a lap width of 16 meters and a height of 22 meters. The ubosot of this elegant temple was constructed in the beautiful Thai-style architecture and houses several mural paintings depicting scenes from the life of Lord Buddha. Thousands of Buddhists pilgrims from various parts of the world visit this Wat to pay their homage to the revered Phra Mahaphutthaphim.
