Angthong Travel Guide:

Wat Khun Inthapramun

Wat Khun Inthapramun is one of the most ancient temples constructed during the Sukhothai period. It houses the largest and longest reclining Buddha of Thailand. Constructed in the famous Ayutthaya style, the reclining Buddha stands 50 meters tall (when measured from the topknot to the feet).

Originally, the reclining Buddha’s image - the appearance and size of which are similar to those of Phranon Chaksi of Sing Buri Province - was housed in the wihan. But unfortunately, the Buddha image was left deserted in the open for centuries after this temple was destroyed by fire.

There is a legend associated with this Wat, according to which a revenue officer, Khun Inthapramun, secretly diverted funds from the government tax to increase the length of the reclining Buddha image from 40 feet to 50 feet.  Very soon the King came to know of this embezzlement and enquired with the revenue officer the source of the funds used for increasing the height of the reclining Buddha. But when Khun Inthapramun did not reveal the truth, he was sentenced to death. As a result of Khun Inthapramun’s efforts, the temple was named as Wat Khun Inthapramun.

Wat Khun Inthapramun is located 11 kilometers from the town of Ang Thong. This famous monastery is in ruins and is surrounded by rice fields on all sides. The reclining Buddha can be found in the open air without any roof. However, this Buddha image is very attractive and Buddhists pilgrims from all over the country visit this Wat to worship the revered image and to get a glimpse of the calm and serene smiling face of the reclining Buddha.

In the Wat, one can find the historical remains of the basement and the walls and the famous reclining Buddha image, in addition to a statue of Khun Inthapramun.
