Wat Phra Borom That

Designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Kamphaeng Phet is a remarkable province that houses the ancient remains of Sukhothai, the first Kingdom of Siam (present day Thailand). These remains provide a glimpse of ancient Thai civilization, its architecture and sculpture.

One such remain is the Wat Phra Borom That, an ancient temple located in the center of Mueang Na Khon Chum. Wat Phra Borom That Chediyaram is a highly popular and revered religious place in the entire province of Kamphaeng Phet. Located on the western banks of Ping River, this ancient temple is believed to have been constructed during the ancient Sukhothai Period.

The most important feature of this temple is the Burmese-style Ched or umbrella. As per available records, the Chedi was originally believed to have been constructed in the Sukhothai style of architecture. However, its style was later altered as a part of restoration work that were conducted a century ago and were funded by a wealthy Burmese devotee. On the southern side of the temple is an Ubosot that contains numerous bronze images of Lord Buddha that have been sculpted in Sukhothai and Ayutthaya styles.

Apart from the Buddha images and the Burmese-style Chedi, Wat Phra Borom That Chediyaram is also known for the festival of Nop Phra Len Pleng. This is an annual festival that is celebrated every year in Kamphaeng Phet so as to pay respect to Lord Buddha. The festival is celebrated on the auspicious day of the full moon during the Makaha Puja period that comes usually during February and March. A grand procession is organized as a part of the festival celebrations that ends at Wat Phra Borom That Chediyaram.
