Kamphaeng Phet Tourist Attraction :

Wat Phra Kaeo Kamphaeng Phet

One of the most important tourist attractions in Kampheang Phet is Wat Phra Kaeo, an important Buddhist monastery and a prominent world heritage site of immense historical significance. This large temple is situated next to Wat Phra That in a place that was once considered to be the location of the royal palace.

The architecture of Wat Phra Kaeo is designed in a rectangular shape with the walls made of round sandstone slabs that are laid parallel to the city wall. All important buildings inside the temple are constructed in sandstone with a remarkable style along the east-west axis.  The most important feature inside the temple is the big bell-shaped Ceylonese Chedi with a lion-adorned base that is octagonal shaped. This chedi belongs to the late Sukhothai period. There is also another round chedi that has an elephant-adorned base. The temple houses some of the most remarkable Buddha figures that stand aloft showing their exemplary splendor among the ruins of the temple. The temple compound also contains a brick footprint of Lord Buddha. In addition, the temple complex contains remnants of several ancient viharas, chedis with different bases and a bot.

The name of the temple “Wat Phra Kaeo” was coined by King Rama IV of the Rattanakosin Period, when he visited the ancient Kamphaeng Phet. Some significant discoveries made around the vicinity of the temple suggest that Wat Phra Kaeo had immense significance during the period of ancient Wachira Prakan Kingdom. Important discoveries -- 35 bases of ruined stupas of different styles, the remains of 8 viharas and 3 ordination halls -- from this area provide ample evidence that Wat Phra Kaeo used to be the center for all important events and occasions held in the Kingdom.

Another important attraction inside the temple compound is the light and sound show and a theatrical performance that explains the history and ruins of Kamphaeng Phet.
