Non Mueang Ancient Town

The ancient town on Non Mueang is located at Ban Na Pho, which is around 80 kilometers from Khon Kaen town in Khon Kaen Province. A visit to this site is a must for anyone who is interested in archaeology.

According to archaeological findings, Non Mueang Ancient Town is surrounded by double moats. In addition, sandstone boundary markers have been found not just in the town but also nearby. These markers are made in Dvaravati style of architecture. Archaeologists also found potsherds scattered around. Some of the potsherds were painted red while others were found cord and incising patterns.

Other evidence shows that Non Mueang was inhabited by humans since the late pre-historic era. Human skeletons dating back to 2,500 years have been found. In addition, funeral tools, utensils and other items were discovered along with the skeletons. Utensils that were found included pottery items along with shells, bangles and colorful beads. Tools like hoe and sickle were also found. Even animal bones like those of fish and barking deer were found. These finds clearly denote that the community living here was agrarian community until the Lop Buri era, which was in 11th and 12th century, around 600 years ago. These finding also confirm that the ancient town of Non Mueang was inhabited from the pre-historic times until the Lop Buri period.

Non Mueang Ancient Town is accessible via Highway 12, which is Khon Kaen-Chum Phoe Road. From the Chum Phae Post Office, the ancient town is around 5 kilometers away.
