Phu Kao Phu Phan Kham National Park

Phu Kao Phu Phan Kham National Park, spread over an area of 322 square kilometers, is located partly in the upper part of Khon Kaen Province and partly in the lower part of Udon Thani.

The topography of the park is mountainous with the top soil made up of sandstone and the soil underneath is either hard soil or sandy hard soil. The entire area is scattered with sandy soil and laterite.

However, Phu Kao Phu Phan Kham National Park still has many plants and animals. Even the natural beauty of the park is breathtaking. The park is covered with deciduous forest.

The national park is shaped like a frying pan. It has mountains around and a great plain in the very center. Millions of years ago, there was a volcano here, and what we see today of Phu Kao Phu Phan Kham is nothing but remains of that volcano. The Phu Kao Mountain Range runs in two lines in the northeast and southwest. The outer line has the high mountains while the inner line comprises of lower mountains. In the southwest part of the park was the plain of Lam Nam Phong, which has now become a lake after the completion of the Ubonratana Dam.

When you come to Phu Kao Phu Phan Kham National Park, you can see Rekha Khanit and Muem Caves, These are believed to be over 3,500 years old and archaeological evidences show that it was inhabited by humans of the Ban Chiang era. You can see paintings and rock carvings on the walls of the caves.

Another place worth visiting is the scenic Ubonratana Dam. This place is ideal for camping and you can get fresh fish from Ubonratana district while you are camping here. Do not forget to visit Ham Tang, the rock columns formed by erosion due to water, wind and rain. The columns have a top shaped like a mushroom.
