Chiang Mai Adventure Tourism

Chiang Mai, with its numerous rivers, streams, waterfalls, caves, hot springs, mountains, hills, and pristine natural beauty, is the ultimate destination for the eco-tourists and people interested in adventure sports.

Tourists, who love adventure sports, have a large number of options for entertaining themselves in Chiang Mai.

They can enjoy a few hours of rafting (using bamboo or rubber rafts) along the Mae Taman, Mae Kok, Mae Chaem (through the beautiful Ob Luang George) and Mae Tuen rivers, which flow through the lush forests and hill tribe villages and hamlets. Whitewater rafting is an unforgettable experience that usually involves covering a 10 kilometer stretch, and takes about two and a half hours to complete depending on the condition of the river. The entire journey is divided into three parts, with the first and third parts of the journey being relatively calm, while the middle section of the journey is the most adrenalin pumping phase, containing whitewater rapids, with turbulent water crashing with great force against huge boulders. Whitewater rafting is a dangerous sport and therefore the tourists are always accompanied by well-trained and experienced rafting experts.

Exploring the rich mountain terrains and scenic peaks, which are studded with caves and waterfalls, is a favorite activity for tourists visiting Chiang Mai. They often do this by trekking (on foot or on Elephant back), cycling or mountain biking. The best trails for these activities are found in Doi Inthanon National Park. Elephant treks are a favorite with the tourists, who love swaying on the back of these immense beasts as they traverse through the open forest lands, and lush paddy fields.

Other forms of adventure sports such as bungee jumping, balloon ride, target shooting, go-karting, jungle reviving are also available in Chiang Mai. One can also enjoy an aerial view of the beautiful region by boarding a micro-light craft. Those interested in rock climbing can have a gala time at Sankampang, a 60 to 80 meter high limestone mountain in Muang On, which provides the best 140 routes for rock climbing.

For the mildly adventurous tourists, Chiang Mai offers ‘All Terrain Vehicle’ rides over the undulating slopes of the magnificent Chiang Dao mountain range.
