Doi Khun Tan National Park

Located amidst the lofty Khun Than mountain ranges in Northern Thailand is  one of the most beautiful and most enchanting national parks in Thailand known as the Doi Khun Tan National Park.

Established in the year 1975, this is the 10th national park in Thailand situated around the mountains that separate Lamphun and Lampang provinces.

The most distinguished feature of Doi Khun Tan National Park is the Thailand’s longest railroad tunnel or the Khun Tan tunnel which is 1,352 meters long. The construction of this tunnel began in the year 1918 at Khuntan. Thousands of workers lost their lives during the construction of the tunnel and it also earned the tunnel its nickname -- Cemetery of Laborers. Only the northern rail line to Chiang Mai runs through this tunnel. Other interesting tourist destinations inside the park include Mae Long and Tat Moie waterfalls.

Apart from the interesting geographical features mentioned above, Doi Khun Tan National Park is also home to several interesting species of birds, plants and animals. There are three different kinds of forests present inside the park that are divided based on their elevation. These include lowland elevation composed of degraded mixed-bamboo deciduous forests, middle elevation comprising of mixed evergreen and deciduous forest and upland elevation that contains mostly evergreen hardwood trees. Two important varieties of pine trees in Thailand, namely two-needle pine and three-needle pine, can be found in the middle elevation. Doi Khun Tan National Park is famous for its beautiful orchids and gingers. Wildlife inside the park includes Siamese hare, porcupine, wild chicken, wild boar and weasel. Also present in the park are various species of reptiles, insects and spiders.

Activities such as trekking and camping are permitted inside the park. Tourists can also ascend the summit of Doi Khun Tan Mountain and spend their vacation in the guest houses located at the top of the summit.
