Mae Ping National Park

Spread over an area of approximately 1,000 square kilometers Mae Ping National Park is one of the most fertile forests in Thailand. It is renowned for its abundant collection of plants, wild animals and birds.

Located 75 miles south of Lampang and Chiang Mai, Mae Ping National Park is home to one of the finest and well preserved stands of original teak forest and tall deciduous dipterocarp forest.

The most important geographical feature of this park is the Ping River that flows through the forests. Present on either sides of the river are fertile forest lands and lush green vegetations along with rugged mountain ranges providing unparalleled beauty, which is a treat to watch. As the Ping River flows, it has formed various lakes and streams in the process. Important among these include Haui Mae Had, Huai Mae Ko, Huai Pong Ka, Huai Muang and Huai Krai. Kaeng Koh is another beautiful lake present inside the park. Raft houses are provided on rent in this lake.

Another major place to visit inside the park is the Ko Luang waterfall. This waterfall is located 20 kilometers from the park headquarters and is fed from limestone waters. It is a truly amazing experience to watch the water falling down from 7 levels that are located at different heights. Nearer to these falls are some lime caves that contain several fascinating stalagmite and stalactite formations. Bhumipol Dam, located on the upper part of Ping River, is an important tourist place for recreation and relaxation. Other places to visit inside the park include Pha Dam-Pha Daeng and Yang Wee cave.

Over 70 different species of birds are found inside the park. Wildlife includes animals such as barking deer, wild pig, fishing cat, Asiatic black deer, small Indian civet, macaque, langur and gibbons. Also present in these jungles are animals like the Malay Pangolin, Slow Loris, bats and snakes.
