Phra Yuen Mongkhon Buddha

Maha Sarakham is a province in the Isan region of Thailand. This northeastern province borders Kalasin, Roi Et, Surin, Buri Ram and Khon Kaen. The provincial capital is also known as Maha Sarakham and it is home to the largest university of the northeastern region of Thailand.

The province of Maha Sarakham primarily has an agriculture-based economy and you can see the plains covered with rice fields. However, on the northern and eastern side of the province, one can see small hills. The province is between 130 and 230 meters above sea level and the main river flowing through it is Chi River.

Maha Sarakham was founded in 1865 as a satellite town of Roi Et. According to historical evidence, the governor of Roi Et sent around 9,000 people to form a new town and made one of his cousins the governor of the town. This town was Maha Sarakham. In 1868, the central government in Bangkok decided to weaken the power of Roi Et by declaring Maha Sarakham into a province.

Today, you can see many historical and cultural sites in the province, which are impressive and delightful. One such site that is worth visiting in Maha Sarakham is Phra Yuen Mongkhon Buddha. This is quite a popular tourist site and the Buddha image is housed in Wat Phuttha Mongkhon. The image is built in Dvaravati style of architecture and it is made from red sandstone.

According to a legend, people of Kanthaarawichai built Buddha images to ask for rain after a period of drought. The men built an image known as Mueang Buddha while the women built the Phra Yuen Mongkhon Buddha. Once both the image were completed, the people held a big celebration to mark the occasion. Thereafter, the area has been getting regular rainfall.
