Nakhon Pathom Travel Guide:

Buddhamonthon

Buddhamonthon is a religious site built by joint efforts of the government and people. It was built to commemorate 2500th year of existence of Buddha and Buddhism. Buddhamonthon is located in Nakhon Pathom and can be accessed by Puttha-Monthon IV Road. It is spread over a large area surrounded by beautiful landscape. Visitors who come here get to see many interesting structures.

The first thing that you will see on entering Buddhamonthon is 15.8 meters tall Buddha image made from bronze gold. This is the central point of the area. Around this tall image of Buddha are four commemorative sites that pay homage and honor different stages in Lord Buddha’s life starting from His birth, enlightenment, preaching of first sermon and finally achieving Nirvana. Besides these, you can also visit a Buddhist museum, meditation halls and a hall that has a marble Pali canon.

Buddhamonthon literally means a Buddhist Town. It is considered to be one of the most important religious sites in Thailand. The idea of having a Buddhist place to commemorate the 2500th year of Buddhism was taken by Premier Field Marshall Phibulsongkhram in 1957. He is responsible for starting the construction of courtyard of Buddhamonthon. He wanted the place to be the center of Buddhist learning.

The huge Buddha image in the center of Buddhamonthon was designed by Prof. Silpa Bhirasri in 1955. However, it was only in 1981 that the image was cast in bronze gold. This near 16-meter tall image was named Phra Si Sakaya Thosaphonlayan by His Majesty, the King of Thailand.
