Chan Sen Ancient City and Chan Sen Museum

Apart from natural wonders and spectacular delights, Nakhon Sawan is also considered to be a significant site for describing ancient Thai civilization.

Situated about 95 kilometers from Nakhon Sawan city in Tambon Chan Sen is the ancient city of Chan Sen. Numerous archaeological excavations conducted in and around the place have revealed certain major facts about the city. Built by Funan-Suphanaphum, this city was believed to have been constructed some 1,000 years ago by the monarchs during the Dvaravati period. During that period, the entire city was constructed on an earth mound that was surrounded by a defensive moat, which was 20 meters wide. Spread over an area of about 480,000 square kilometers, the ancient city of Chan Sen was about 800 meter long and 700 meters wide. The entire city was constructed in a square shape with the corners rounded almost in the form of a circle.

At present, the ancient city of Chan Sen is nothing but a waterlogged valley. However, one can still observe the traces of the moat. A visit round the city is possible only after obtaining permission from the authorities at Chan Sen Temple. Youth volunteers and guides are available for guiding tourists around the city.

Located near the city is the ancient museum of Chan Sen that houses several artifacts unearthed during excavations. Some of the items found include earthenware, amulets, dolls, lamps and pedestals, and metal objects like earrings and spearheads, Buddhism wheels, axes and the bronze images of Lord Buddha in the Man Wichai posture. The museum is open for visitors during weekends.
