Nakhon Sawan Tourist Attraction :

The Origin of the Chao Phraya River

Present in the northern part of Thailand is the one of the most glamorous parts of the country known as Nakhon Sawan Province.

Amongst the major tourist attractions located around the province is the origin of Chao Phraya River, the largest and the most important waterway in Thailand.

According to the historical evidences, the river was originally known as Mae Nam. The name “Chao Phraya” or the “River of Kings” was coined at a later period. The Chao Phraya River originates at Tambon Pak Nam Pho or the city of Nakhon Sawan. This is the place where the Ping, Wang, Yom and Nan rivers converge. This convergence is a rare geographical phenomenon and truly a spectacular wonder. One can clearly distinguish between the rivers and also the way they converge. While the Nan River is reddish in color, the Ping River is slightly greenish in color. The Chao Phraya River then flows south towards Bangkok. After traveling a distance of 372 kilometers and passing through several provinces in the country, the river finally merges into the Gulf of Thailand.

Located on the right side of Chao Phraya River origin is the Chao Pho Thepharak-Chao Mae Thaptim Shrine. Locals hold this place in high regard and also consider it as the best place to view of the origin of Chao Phraya. Boats and ferries are available on rent for enthusiastic tourists who would like to have a glimpse of the scenery on both the banks of the river and also pay homage to Luang Pho To Buddha image at Wat Pak Nam Pho or Wat Thong Thammachat Nua.
