Nam Wa Rafting

Situated in the northern part of Thailand, Nan is one of the most beautiful provinces in the Thailand. Spread over an area of 11,500 square kilometers, Nan Province is home to numerous Thai Lu and other hill tribes of Thailand.

Apart from this, there is one ideal location inside the province for tourists who love some adventure and would like to experience the thrill of making their way through gushing rapids while passing through endless drops and falls.

River rafting is fast gaining importance in Thailand. One good place for this is the Mae Nam Wa, which is a tributary from Nan River and originates at Khao Chom Pi Pan Nam mountain range present near the Thai-Laos border. There are several reasons due to which rafting through the water of Nam Wa is considered by visitors as an once-in-a-lifetime experience. Originally, Nam Wa River was used for transportation of teak woods and other forest materials that were gathered illegally from the surrounding forests. Currently, the entire area has been modified as a popular tourist spot. Mae Nam Wa actually contains more than 22 rapids with waters passing through valleys and being surrounded by undulating mountains and beautiful surroundings. In fact, these rapids are of level 3 to 5 difficulty with a total length of 100 kilometers. The most difficult part of the journey is when the waters pass through Kaeng Luang. It journey starts from Ban Nam Phu and takes at least 4-5 hours to complete the entire journey.

There are two different rafting routes on Mae Nam Wa. Sailing route by inflatable rubber dinghy is 19.2 kilometers in length that starts from Ban Nam Phu and ends at Ban Hat Rai. Located in the Ban Hat Rai is an elephant camp where visitors can also enjoy the experience of an elephant ride.

Another route is the Bamboo rafting route that starts from Ban Nam Wa and ends at Ban Nam Phu. The entire length of the route is 4 kilometers and takes approximately 4 hours to complete.

Ideal time for rafting is from September to January. There are several local agencies that can arrange a rafting trip for you.
