Ban Khu Bua Ancient City  

        Ban Khu Bua Ancient City is situated in the subdistrict of Khu Bua in the province of Ratchaburi. This is an archaeological site which is a must see for those who interested in archaeology or the history of Thailand.


        According to evidences found from the Ban Khu Bua Ancient City site, there are indications that Ratchaburi used to be a port city during the Dvaravati era. The architecture of the ancient city also shows that it was influenced by the Gupta School of Indian art. Further evidence shows that Buddhism has been around in Thailand for more than one thousand years.

        Many artifacts have been discovered from the site including ancient Buddha images' heads. These are kept on display at the Ratchaburi National Museum. Some of the artifacts are also kept at Wat Klong Suwannakhiri.

        Excavations have discovered other buildings likes Boran Sathan Wat Khlong, which is situated near the entrance of Wat Klong Suwannakhiri, around 5 kilometers south of the ancient town. This ancient building is rectangular in shape. In the north and the south, there are 3 porches. The porch in the east stretches out and forms a stairway that it used to climb to the top. The base of the building is made from laterite and then covered with cement. Then there is the second base which is shaped like a curved lotus. On the second base, bricks have been used to form rectangular panels that are decorated with stucco in the shape of Bua Fan Yak. Then there is another base on top of the second one which has rectangular niches on the top and large pilasters above. Between the pilasters there is a niche which is called Sum Charanam and the pointed end of the niche keep switching with the pilasters all along the entire line of the wall.

        You can see another pagoda which is square shaped and has a width of 20.80 meters and height of 50.40 meters. The lower base of the pagoda is shaped like a square plinth and is made from bricks and cement. Then there is the second base shaped like a bent lotus and it has a small rectangular niche.
