Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

Damnoen Saduak, popularly known as Khlong Ton Khem Floating Market, one of the most famous attractions of Ratchaburi. According to records, around 1856, King Rama IV ordered a canal to be dug for a distance of 32 kilometers connecting Mae Klong River at Bang Nok Khwaek to Tha Chin River at Pratunam Bang Yang.

This allowed the people from the province to commute and visit each other conveniently and also led to the creation of this fantastic floating market.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is around 80 kilometers from Bangkok and was shifted to its current location in 1984. The market was shifted from Ton Khem Canal to Damnoen Saduak Canal. However, the market has been popular for much longer than that. Tourists discovered the market way back in 1967 and ever since it has been a regular tourist haunt. A visit to Ratchaburi province is incomplete without a visit to Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.

The best time to visit the market is early in the morning. By noon the market closes as all the vendors start heading home. Once here, you can see the vendors dressed in dark colored clothes wearing hat made from palm leaves rowing their boats and selling or bartering their products. You can get fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, meat and even the ubiquitous trinkets. However, it is best to avoid buying the trinkets as they are not worth the price.

This floating market has been around from ever since waterways were the main mode of transportation. Damnoen Saduak Floating Market of Ratchaburi is reminiscent of the way of life that was present in Bangkok not so long ago. The floating market fulfills a great social requirement wherein it is a place to buy and sell everyday objects and items. It is a center of communication where people from different places meet and share information.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is around 5 kilometers from Ratchaburi and is easily accessible from Bangkok via bus, taxi boats or public transport boats.
