Khao Ngu Stone Park

Khao Ngu Stone Park is located in the subdistrict of Ko Phlapphla and is situated at the foot of Khao Ngu Hill. It is around 8 kilometers from the town and has a cave that relates to Buddhism.

Inside the cave you can see a relief image of Lord Buddha which has been sculptured in wall of the cave. This image shows Lord Buddha sitting in European style and that posture is that of preaching a sermon. The posture is according to the art found during the Dvaravati period. The Buddha image is commonly known as Phra Phutthachai Tham Ruesi Khao Ngu.

If you look at the image carefully, you will see that it has a flat face, protruding eyes, flat nose, thick lips, curved and connected eyebrows that are thick, large curls in the hair and a halo. There is an inscription in Sanskrit from the Pallava scriptures between the ankles of the image that reads Punyakarmjara Srisamdhigupta. This script roughly translate to Srisamadhigupta is the one who purifies his mind with his good deeds.

In the cave there are many Buddha images made from sandstone that belong to the Ayutthaya style of art. Other attractions of Khao Ngu Stone Park include a replica of Lord Buddha's footprint, which is made from laterite and enshrine in the image hall on the top of the hill, and Tham Fa Tho, which is another cave and has sculptures of reclining Buddha, tree-shaped stucco and a group of deities.
