Wat Phra Fang

Situated on the left bank of the beautiful Maenam Nan River is the majestic Wat Phra Fang Sawangkhamuninat. This beautiful temple is located 16 kilometers south of the town of Uttradit in the Tambon Pha Jook.

Wat Phra Fang Sawangkhamuninat is one of the most ancient temples in Thailand that was constructed during the Sukhothai Period. The romantic ruins of the temple are shaded by beautiful trees and provide an excellent glimpse of Sukhothai architecture. A major portion of this temple is in ruins and is currently undergoing renovation. One of the most attractive features of this temple is the Phra Mahathat Chedi. Located in the temple is a large wiharn whose columns are supporting the already dilapidated and partially collapsed roof and the Chedi of the temple. The front wall of the temple used to house an exquisitely carved large wooden door. This door is currently being maintained at Thammatipatai temple located in the town of Uttaradit. Wat Phra Fang Sawangkhamuninat was once used to be the place of Phra Fang, one of the most revered Buddha images in Thailand. The dilapidated state of the temple led to the shifting of the image to Benchamaborphit temple in Bangkok by King Chulalongkorn. However, the temple still contains a partially restored image of an old Phra Ubosot that belongs to the Ayutthaya period. The entire temple is richly decorated with stucco works and beautiful paintings that are worth seeing.

You can reach this temple by crossing the bridge on the Maenam Nan that is present on the southern side of Uttradit town. After crossing the bridge, proceed along the road to Baan Kung Tha Pao. The journey can be completed by either using a car or a boat.
