Pattani was famous for having a woman rules and the biggest cannon called Nang Phaya Tani. Most of the population of Pattani is Muslim. The general geography of the land is low basin which makes the area suitable for cultivation.
Pattani is home to the most beautiful and large mosque in Thailand. The mosque is called Pattani Central Mosque it is located on the outskirts of Pattani town on the Pattani-Yala Highway. Also close to Pattani town is the ruin of a 200-year mosque known as Kru Se Mosque. This mosque is 7 kilometers from Pattani town on the Pattani-Narathiwat Highway. Right next to the mosque is the shrine of Chao Mae Lim Ko Nieo which is constructed in the Chinese style.
27 kilometers from Pattani on the Khok Pho-Yala Road is the Wat Chang Hai, a 300-year old monastery. The monastery is popular for its beautiful building and sacred tablets. The monastery has a training center for the locals and visitors are allowed to see the process of making famous crafts of the South like Batik cloth, wickerwork, artificial flowers made from flour dough and replicas of Kolae boats.
Pattani has many beautiful beaches on the eastern coast and some of these are Hat Khae Khae, Hat Panare, Hat Chalalai, Hat Ratcharak, Hat Patatimo, Hat Talokapo and Laem Tachi. On some beaches you can see beautiful fishing villages with their fishing boats having colorful painted designs known as Ko Lae, which is a symbol of Pattani.
