Suphan Buri Travel Guide :
Sa Saksit (Sacred Pond)
Suphan Buri is a very historical province with many beautiful places that you can see and admire. The province was extremely prosperous during the Dvaravati era and used to be called Phanchum Buri. It is believed that it was built during 877 and 882 A.D. on the left bank of Tha Chin River. However, during the reign of King Katae, the location of Suphan Buri was moved to the right bank of the river. |
Suphan Buri was considered an important town in ancient Thailand and was constantly involved in many wars. This caused the town a lot of damage, which continued right until the end reign of King Rama V, when the town was relocated once again to the east bank of the river, its present location.
Sa Saksit are actually six ponds which are considered to be extremely sacred. The water from these ponds was used for each and every royal ceremony that took place in the area. The sacred ponds are located in Sa Kaeo subdistrict, around 13 kilometers from the center of Suphan Buri town.
There is no evidence as to how the ponds turned sacred but experts believe that King Rama V was told to declare them so after receiving advice from an important guru. Initially only 4 ponds were found but later on two more ponds were discovered.
Today, the water from the Sa Saksit is not used by the villagers neither do they eat the fish living in the ponds. The reason could be that the villagers still consider the ponds sacred. As the ponds are not used, there is grass growing around them, making the ponds an ideal home for crocodiles.
