Surin Travel Guide :
Surin Elephant Festival
The northeast region is one of the most popular regions in Thailand and it also the area where Surin Province is located. Surin is also the place where the hugely popular Surin Elephant Festival is held. This festival is held in the provincial town and no matter what happens, the festival takes place on the third Saturday of November each year. |
The Surin Elephant Festival is extremely popular not just with the foreign tourists but also with the domestic ones. It is held on a very large scale and it seems to be a befitting tribute to Thailand's most loved animal -- the elephant.
You will definitely not be disappointed when you see over 200 elephants from all over Thailand converging at the festival. You will see these massive magnificent animals performing tasks that even small domestic animals are unable to do. You can see the elephants re-enacting the ancient parade of war elephants, showing their strength, agility and intelligence, a fighting a tug-of-war with 70 strong men from the Royal Thai Army. All these animal shows are interspersed with folk dancing, cultural performance.
The Surin Elephant Festival is a time to let down your hair and enjoy the show put on my elephants and their mahouts. You can cheer for any team you like when the soccer game is played or you can clap yourself silly watching an elephant pick up a tiny matchbox at a single command.
The Surin Elephant Festival keeps getting bigger and bigger each year attracting thousands of people to enjoy themselves over the two day period.
