Thailand-Cambodia Border Open? Crossings Suspended

No, the land crossings between Thailand and Cambodia remain suspended, so a Bangkok to Siem Reap trip cannot go overland. Entering Cambodia by air at Siem Reap still works, with a visa and an e-Arrival Card filed within 7 days before arrival. Keep away from the border strip itself.

The land border is shut: crossings between Thailand and Cambodia remain suspended, so a Bangkok to Siem Reap trip has to go by air this year. Plan around that before you book a bus or a border-run day.

What is suspended

Land borders and crossings between Thailand and Cambodia remain suspended, and the Cambodian side describes the border the same way. The cause is fighting: it broke out along parts of the border in July 2025, and further clashes in early December involved rocket and artillery fire. A ceasefire was agreed on 27 December 2025, and it is in effect, but the security situation in border areas remains unpredictable; the land crossings are still closed and martial law covers several districts along the border.

When Thailand first restricted the crossings in June 2025, each checkpoint ran its own opening times, documents and rules, and regular crossings for trade, education and medical services stayed open. The latest advice still describes the crossings as suspended.

Getting to Cambodia from Thailand now

Go by air. Siem Reap is one of three Cambodian airports where arriving by air means filing an electronic e-Arrival Card within 7 days before you land, and the card is free. You also need a visa as a visitor; a tourist visa is valid for 30 days from the date of entry, and your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive.

Look up fares and schedules on the airline’s own site. Fares are not covered here. For baggage and booking rules on Thai domestic legs, see the getting around guide. For the wider picture on risks in Thailand, see is Thailand safe for tourists.

If you planned a border run

A border run on a visa exemption now loses its route. Visa-exempt entry for tourism through land-border checkpoints is normally limited to 2 entries per calendar year, and that limit does not generally apply to arrivals by air. With the Cambodian crossings suspended, they are not available for those entries. The land border guide explains the cap, and the exemption guide covers extending a visa-exempt stay inside Thailand.

The Thai border area

Stay out of the strip next to the border. The UK line is to avoid all but essential travel within 20 km of the land border with Cambodia. The Canadian line is wider: avoid all travel within 50 km.

If you are routing near the border, plan to stay outside the 50 km line. Travel to the affected border regions should be avoided. Tourist sites close to the border, including Khao Phra Wihan (Preah Vihear), Ta Kwai (Ta Krabey) and Ta Muen Thom (Tamone Thom), are closed, and unexploded landmines remain in the area.
