A private passenger car that carries no more than seven people can be registered as an electronic ride-hailing hire car. The Ministerial Regulation is dated 17 June 2021 and was published in the Royal Gazette on 23 June 2021.

The Grab taxis at the Suvarnabhumi service centre are certified by the Department of Land Transport. The AOT service covers Grab Taxi, Grab Car and Just Grab.

In March 2025 the Ministry of Transport asked Bolt to bring rider sign-up in line with Department of Land Transport standards, including a public driving licence. A news report of 24 September 2026 says stricter enforcement starts on 1 October 2026 for app platforms, drivers and vehicles.

The same report names eight app providers at the Ministry meeting: Grab, Bolt, inDrive, TADA, MAXIM, LINE MAN, Lalamove and FINGOGO.

The regulation fixes what the car and the app carry. Check these points before you get in.

The fare bands in the Gazette

The Ministry of Transport notice of 12 November 2021 sets fare bands by car size. The app calculates the fare within these bands.

Car size First 2 km Each further km
Small THB 40 to 45 THB 6 to 10
Medium THB 45 to 50 THB 7 to 12
Large THB 100 to 150 THB 12 to 16

Booking through the app adds THB 20. When there are too few cars for the demand, the surcharge is at most the fare itself and never more than THB 200.

For Grab car services the price is known before you book, excluding tolls and surcharges. Grab charges include applicable tolls. Bolt’s upfront estimate appears once you enter the destination.

A Bolt upfront fare does not apply if you change the destination during the ride or the route uses tolls. Bolt charges can include booking fees, municipal tolls and airport surcharges.

Grab at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Grab picks up at Passenger Terminal, Level 1, Gate 4, and the pick-up point operates 24 hours. Pick-up points A and B are both at Arrival Exit 4 on the first floor.

An average ride from the city centre to Suvarnabhumi takes 40 to 60 minutes and costs about THB 350 to 500 over about 30 km. That is Grab’s own estimate, not a fare quote.

You can book a Grab in advance from 90 days to 75 minutes before pick-up.

Bolt at Suvarnabhumi Airport

Bolt serves Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai airports, and airport pick-up availability might change. The Bolt pick-up spot at Suvarnabhumi can change, so you check it in the app when you request the ride.

Bolt lets you reserve a ride up to 90 days ahead. Read the airport rail, bus and taxi options in the Suvarnabhumi airport guide.

Payment, cancellation and extra fees

You can pay a Grab ride with cash, credit card, debit card or GrabPay. Bolt takes a credit or debit card in the app, and Bolt Balance, cash or mobile payments depending on location.

If you cancel a Grab or do not show up, you may be charged a cancellation fee, with the amount published on Grab’s website. Extra Bolt fees are a cancellation fee, a waiting-time fee and compensation for damage to the driver’s car.

Safety features

Grab offers an emergency button, live trip sharing and a trial feature that records audio during rides. Grab driver partners go through a 25-point background check, training and vehicle inspection.

Bolt’s safety tools are the Emergency Assist button, a share-location link, pick-up codes and a hidden phone number. With a pick-up code nobody else can take your trip by mistake.

The metered taxi and the complaint line

Airport taxis run 24 hours from Level 1 between Gates 4 and 7, and you take a queue ticket first. Public taxi fares start at THB 35 or THB 40 plus the Department of Land Transport meter.

Taxis from the airport charge an extra THB 50 airport surcharge on top of the meter, paid to the driver. The passenger pays expressway tolls.

This guide gives no price verdict. Compare Grab’s estimate in the app with the meter rules above.

The Department of Land Transport complaint line is 1584. For scams and other numbers see the scams guide.
