Thailand Cost of Living by City: Rent and Bills
Electricity costs the same in all five cities: THB 3.0000 a unit for the first 200 units under both MEA and PEA. Rent separates them. AffordWhere's example month runs from THB 20,250 in Chiang Mai to THB 31,100 in Bangkok.

If you want the cheapest of the five big spots, pick Chiang Mai: a month there runs THB 20,250, against THB 31,100 in Bangkok. Rent is where the cities really differ, because the power bill is the same everywhere.
What a month costs
These are example months for one adult: a lower-end one-bedroom plus everyday costs. Treat them as a guide, not a quote, since they come from a rent aggregator rather than signed leases.
| City | One-bedroom rent range | Example month | Below Bangkok |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok | THB 12,000 to THB 55,000 | THB 31,100 | none |
| Chiang Mai | THB 6,500 to THB 18,000 | THB 20,250 | THB 10,850 |
| Phuket | THB 9,000 to THB 27,000 | THB 25,750 | THB 5,350 |
| Pattaya | THB 8,500 to THB 34,000 | THB 23,780 | THB 7,320 |
| Hua Hin | THB 7,500 to THB 29,000 | THB 21,825 | THB 9,275 |

Hua Hin comes second on price, then Pattaya, with Phuket the priciest outside Bangkok.
If you are staying a few months, rent is the line to watch, so here is a second source to check the table above against. These are crowd-sourced Numbeo estimates from October 2026, so treat them as a market guide rather than a price list. Each row is one person’s monthly costs excluding rent, then a one-bedroom in the centre and outside it, then home broadband and a mobile plan.
| City (Numbeo estimate, Oct 2026) | Month excl. rent | 1-bed centre | 1-bed outside | Broadband | Mobile |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok | THB 23,387.5 | THB 22,456.63 | THB 11,190.48 | THB 601.70 | THB 500.27 |
| Chiang Mai | THB 18,074.8 | THB 15,580.00 | THB 10,184.62 | THB 674.33 | THB 414.00 |
| Phuket | THB 21,383.7 | THB 24,466.67 | THB 15,600.00 | THB 577.26 | THB 376.67 |
Moving a few streets out of the centre is the easy saving on a stay of a few months, so look at places outside the centre before you commit.
Electricity is the same everywhere
Bangkok is billed by MEA and the other four by PEA, but a normal home pays THB 3.0000 a unit for the first 200 units under both. Past that the rate climbs, so run the aircon sparingly.

Water costs more outside Bangkok
For 20 cubic metres a month, Bangkok’s MWA bill comes to THB 170 and the provincial PWA rate to THB 262.00. Either way it’s a small line next to rent.
Getting around and eating
A Chiang Mai city bus is THB 30 a trip, and a Pattaya baht bus is normally THB 15 for most trips. For meals, Chiang Mai is cheapest at THB 75 at an inexpensive restaurant and Phuket dearest at THB 150. Those meal prices are crowd-sourced, so use them loosely.
Which city for which budget
Chiang Mai suits the tightest budget. Hua Hin and then Pattaya give you the beach without Bangkok prices, Phuket carries an island premium, and Bangkok is the pick for big-city work and transport.
