Train to Hua Hin Currently on the train from Bangkok to Hua Hin. $5 USD, and well worth the trip so far. Fun experience in and of itself. Food vendors selling food and drink. Beautiful countryside and a nice rain storm. If you’re not in a rush and just want to chill, this is a great option

I've taken the express train and it was about 3 hours. I wouldn't take the regular train as it's too slow. The benefit of the train over car is the cost and having the local experience. Arguably the scenery for both the train and car/bus are close enough.

I think you’re going to enjoy it. My car (10) only had a squat toilet that I imagine would be kind of difficult to use moving on the train, so maybe use the bathroom beforehand.

No, I don’t really know how it works. Most cars looked pretty similar. I think 1st class might be the sleeper bed option (maybe with AC?), 2nd class was all forward facing seats with plenty of legroom, fans, and big windows to open for fresh air, 3rd class I think is seats facing both directions with what appeared to be less legroom.

Trains are limited to like 40-60km/h in Bangkok, and it can only do 120km/h flat out. There are also stops along the route so the average speed is even lower. All in all, average speed is probably 60-80km/h

For me, 3h is just about the limit on trip length for a short 1-night weekend trip. If it takes longer, even if just 4h, it's not worth it unless I stay 2+ days. You're also right that 3h on a train is much better than 3h on a bus, no contest.
