Thailand DTV Visa: Funds, Documents, Fees and Stay
The Destination Thailand Visa needs financial evidence of at least THB 500,000. It is valid for 5 years, with 180 days per entry and one 180-day extension. Each embassy sets its own fee, for example USD 400 in Washington and GBP 300 in London, not the THB 10,000 on the ministry sheet.

Who qualifies for a DTV
The ministry lists three groups.
- Remote workers: digital nomads, remote workers and freelancers.
- Activity participants: Muay Thai courses, Thai cooking classes, sport training, medical treatment, seminars and music festivals.
- Family: the spouse and dependent children of a DTV holder, with children under 20 at the Washington embassy.

Funds proof: THB 500,000
Each post asks for financial evidence of at least THB 500,000, in a different form.

Documents and the 31 August 2026 change
Two documents changed for applications submitted from 00.00 hrs on 31 August 2026 Thailand time. Applications submitted before that date are processed under the old list.
- Residence: proof of permanent residence replaced the document indicating your current location.
- Police record: a certificate of criminal record clearance was added.
Posts name the country of residence they accept. Examples of residence proof at Washington are a valid US visa or a permanent resident card. London asks for permanent residence in the UK, Ireland or the British Overseas Territories, such as UK indefinite leave to remain.
The police certificate has a freshness limit that varies by post.

For the purpose of visit you add one more document.
- Remote work: an employment contract or employment certificate in your country, or a professional portfolio showing digital nomad, remote worker, foreign talent or freelancer status.
- Self-employed: Washington accepts a business licence or registration showing your name.
- Employees who are not US citizens: Washington does not accept pay stubs as proof of employment.
- Thai soft power activity: proof of confirmation to attend the activity, or a letter of appointment from a hospital or medical center.
Washington needs certified English translations, notarized by an embassy or ministry of foreign affairs, for documents issued outside Thailand and the US. Missing documents, screenshots or unclear files bring a request for more documents and a delay.
How to apply
You apply on the Thai e-Visa platform or at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate-General.
- Pick the post that covers the country where you hold permanent residence.
- Upload all listed documents as clear files.
- Pay the fee. It is non-refundable.
- Expect questions. The embassy may ask for an interview or more documents, and filing does not guarantee a visa.

The ministry sheet of July 2024 shows THB 10,000. That is not what you pay at most posts. Each post sets its own fee.

How long you can stay
The visa is valid for 5 years. Multiple entries are allowed, with 180 days per entry.
One extension is possible through the Thai Immigration Bureau, for a period not exceeding 180 days per entry. After the maximum stay of 180 days plus 180 days you depart Thailand and re-enter on the same DTV within its validity. For an extension, you contact the Immigration Bureau directly once you are in Thailand.
An extension of stay costs THB 1,900 on the Immigration Bureau fee schedule.
Rules while you stay
These duties apply to a foreigner staying temporarily, whatever the visa.
- 90-day report: notify immigration of your address every 90 days. You can report from 15 days before until 7 days after the due date. A late report is made in person with a THB 2,000 fine.
- TM.30: the house-master, owner or hotel manager notifies immigration within twenty-four hours of your arrival.
- Re-entry: leaving without a re-entry permit cancels the permitted stay. A single permit costs THB 1,000 and a multiple one THB 3,800.
- Arrival card: from 1 May 2025 you complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within 3 days before arrival. It is filed for every entry and is free.
- Overstay: THB 500 per day, capped at THB 20,000.
DTV and Thai tax
The DTV carries no tax status of its own. The days you spend in Thailand decide it.
Anyone who spends one hundred and eighty days in Thailand in a tax year, in one stay or several, is treated as a resident for that year.
For a resident, foreign-source income brought into Thailand is taxed. This applies to income brought in from 1 January 2024 onward. Someone in Thailand fewer than 180 days is not taxed on that year’s foreign income, even if it is brought in. Savings from work or business abroad, built up in non-resident years, come in without this tax.
Count your days before you move money. The LTR visa has its own tax rules for some categories.

What's wrong with DTV? Firstly, I've been to Thailand many times since 2006, especially in the last year, I went four times. So I decided to stay in Thailand for an extended period, and I got my boss's approval. Then I applied for a DTV online about two weeks ago and paid 52,000 JPY. I submitted additional documents once, and then I received the visa. At first, I was very happy. But upon closer inspection, it was just a six-month multiple-entry tourist visa, expiring on December 8th. When I applied for the DTV, I clearly stated that I planned to go to Thailand in September. I'm already visa-free to Thailand. This tourist visa is simply absurd for me! And I even paid such a high fee. I would rather they had refused me. I'm really angry. I emailed the consulate, but no one replied. And there's no place on the online application website where I can submit feedback. Has anyone encountered a similar problem? How can it be resolved?

I don't think so. There have also been some reports of freshly approved DTV holders being asked to show their supporting documents by immigration officers once they land in Thailand, which seems to support the practice of double scrutiny.

If anyone bothers to actually read the fine print on the Thai e-visa site it states that they can and will issue another visa if they deem the visa you applied for to be inappropriate for the information you provided. It also states no refund of the difference will occur.

Yeah I've been living here 2 years on the DTV and they've never asked for anything at immigration. Doing runs on tourist visas was a nightmare so I'm very thankful they came up with this visa and hope it's never removed. I still have another 8 years before I can qualify for a retirement visa.

Denied Entry with DTV Writing this from the airport detention area. Flew into bangkok from vietnam for my third dtv entry. IO looked at my passport, flipped through some pages and shook her head. She said "you stay thailand too much". I told her i have DTV and she ignored me and summoned a supervisor to take me to a secondary inspection area. They grilled me about why I stayed in thailand so long. Said i'm on a workcation, working online as per my DTV. he demanded to see all my documents, bank statements, pay slips, tax returns, work contracts. He wanted to see my phone so he could check out the platform where i get clients from. I showed him the 500k baht in my bank account but he said its only been there for 1 month and he cannot let me in. I pleaded my case but he had no mercy. I was forced to buy a ticket to vietnam and will be out on the next flight. Looks like the DTV is on the way out. Do not spend all your time in thailand on DTV. Only stay for a short amount of time.

This isn’t the DTV “failing” this is a classic red flag case. You stayed long, came back multiple times, and your funds only showed up recently. That combo screams “trying to live here long-term without a proper setup,” even if you technically have the visa.DTV doesn’t guarantee entry. Immigration still decides at the border, and they look at Travel pattern, How long you actually stay. Whether your income/funds look legit and consistent. Having 500k means nothing if it’s only been there for a month that’s exactly the kind of thing they flag. The takeaway isn’t “don’t stay long,” it’s: don’t look like you’re gaming the system. Keep your financials consistent, not last-minute. Have a clean story. Be ready to show real proof of income/work. The funds don't have to be seasoned with a DTV. It can be savings, a family members savings or even a credit card with the B500k limit.

Frequent stays in Thailand—immigration told me to get a DTV. Real warning or bad luck? Hey folks 👋 Looking for some advice. Since March 2024 I’ve basically only been traveling to Thailand. I spent \~5 months here in 2024, and about 4 months so far in 2025. When I flew in this July, immigration asked why I come so often / stay so long. I explained I have a girlfriend here; they even asked for her address and passport details. They let me in, but the officer told me to get a DTV next time. While I was waiting for the entry stamp, I noticed the officer was grilling almost everyone, so maybe it was just a strict day—but this is the first time I’ve ever been questioned. Should I take the DTV suggestion seriously, or was this just bad luck with a strict officer? Any recent experiences or advice appreciated. Thanks! 🙏

If you want to stay here long-term, get a DTV then you literally don’t have to have the stress. I flew to Manila got mine in four days came back and for the next five years I don’t have to worry about it.
