Tipping in Thailand: Read the Bill First, 10% and 7%
Read the bill before you tip, because many Thai menus add a 10% service charge and 7% VAT on top of the prices. Some hotel spas quote prices that already include both. A Grab tip is optional, and only GrabPay rides can add one.
On this page
Read the bill before you tip: a Bangkok menu adds a 10% service charge and 7% VAT on top of its prices, while a Pattaya hotel spa already includes both. The footnote tells you what is left to add.
Reading the bill
A footnote that says “subject to” means the charges come on top, and “inclusive” means they are already in the price.

Take the THB 950 seafood tom kha on that menu. The service charge is THB 95, the VAT is THB 73.15, and the bill comes to THB 1,118.15.
The general VAT rate is 7 percent, and it applies to service fees too. A small stall with turnover under THB 1.8 million is exempt, so it may show no VAT line.
If the bill looks wrong
The price on the menu has to match what you are charged. A mismatch carries a fine of up to THB 10,000, and you can call the Department of Internal Trade on 1569.
Spa and massage
A hotel spa can quote one all-in price. A 60-minute Thai massage at the Pattaya spa is THB 1,400. At Wat Pho the massage school charges THB 520 for 60 minutes.
Taxi extras that are not tips
The extra THB 50 on Suvarnabhumi public taxis is a fixed charge for the driver, announced by the Ministry of Transport. Don Mueang adds the same THB 50 to the meter. Tolls are on you.
On the street, agree the price before a tuk-tuk ride to the Grand Palace, because it can cost more than a taxi. Give the driver exact instructions on where you want to go.
Tipping a Grab driver
Tipping a driver is not necessary, but it is appreciated if they went out of their way to help. You tip in the app, and only on GrabPay rides. Pick a preset amount, and do it within 72 hours of the ride.

Not confirmed: No Thai government body or operator page read sets a tipping scale for massage, hotel staff, guides or restaurants, so no amount is stated here. Whether a venue passes its service charge to staff is not stated on the pages read. Ask the venue if it matters to you.
