Route A: Bangkok, Ayutthaya and the sleeper north
This route covers Bangkok sights, a day trip to Ayutthaya, the sleeper to Chiang Mai and the White Temple. The table lists fixed costs and leaves out hotels, food, the flight home and local rides.
| Fixed cost | Price |
|---|---|
| Three Visa withdrawals at KBank | THB 750 |
| Airport Rail Link into the city, top of the range | THB 45 |
| Grand Palace | THB 500 |
| Wat Pho | THB 300 |
| Wat Arun | THB 200 |
| Third class train to Ayutthaya and back | THB 40 |

| White Temple | THB 200 |
| AIS 15-day SIM | THB 699 |
| Total | THB 3,802 |
The total is a sum of the ten lines above. The three Old City tickets add up to THB 1,000, and two third class tickets add up to THB 40 at THB 20 each. The Ayutthaya train page has the timetable.
Route B: Bangkok, then ferries south
This route swaps the north for the Gulf islands. Lomprayah sells a Bangkok to Koh Samui bus and catamaran ticket from THB 1,200. Then the catamaran from Samui to Koh Phangan costs THB 350, and from Koh Phangan to Koh Tao it costs THB 600.
| Fixed cost | Price |
|---|---|
| Three Visa withdrawals at KBank | THB 750 |
| Airport Rail Link into the city, top of the range | THB 45 |
| Three Old City tickets | THB 1,000 |
| Bangkok to Koh Samui bus and catamaran, from | THB 1,200 |
| Samui to Koh Phangan catamaran | THB 350 |
| Koh Phangan to Koh Tao catamaran | THB 600 |
| AIS 15-day SIM | THB 699 |
| Total, at least | THB 4,644 |
The total is a sum, and the Samui ticket is a floor, so it is a minimum. For Phi Phi, add a THB 450 ferry from Krabi. See the Samui ferry operators and Bangkok to Samui pages.
Ways to cut the fixed costs
Each saving below rests on a published price. Apply the ones that fit your route.
- Take out fewer, larger withdrawals. KBank charges THB 250 per transaction. One withdrawal in place of three saves THB 500. Its maximum is THB 30,000 per transaction.
- Pay with Visa rather than Mastercard at KBank, which costs THB 100 less per withdrawal.
- Use American Express at Krungsri: THB 50 per withdrawal against THB 250 for Visa, which is THB 200 less.
- Go to a Krungsri counter. An international Visa costs THB 200 there, THB 50 less than at its ATM.
- Choose the third class seat on train 13, at THB 310. It costs THB 458 less than the upper sleeper berth.
- Buy the shorter AIS SIM when your trip is short. It costs THB 500 less than the 30-day plan.
- Pick one Ayutthaya temple. It costs THB 80 against THB 300 for the combination, a gap of THB 220.
- Ride the Purple or Red Line. Under the Daily Fare Policy a general passenger pays at most THB 40 a day on them.
Money tips that change the budget
ATMs and exchange
Count the ATM fee as a cost of every withdrawal, not once per trip. If you pick currency conversion at a Krung Thai ATM, it adds 4% of the amount withdrawn. Compare banks on the ATM fee page and the money guide.
At a changer, a transaction from THB 50,000 needs a copy of an identity document such as an ID card or passport. Customs wants a declaration for more than THB 450,000 in baht or USD 15,000 in foreign notes. See currency exchange.
Tipping and service charges
Tipping drivers on Grab is not necessary but always appreciated. The in-app tip works only for rides paid with GrabPay. One Bangkok restaurant’s menu adds a 10% service charge and 7% value-added tax to its prices. See tipping in Thailand.
Entry fee and insurance
A flat THB 450 per person is the proposed tourist entry fee. The draft still goes to the National Tourism Policy Committee and then the Cabinet. Follow the entry fee page before you book flights.
Keep a line for insurance.
Private hospitals in Thailand are of a high standard but can be expensive. Hospitals require a guarantee of payment before treating patients. Driving or riding without a valid licence could invalidate your travel insurance. See hospital costs and travel insurance.
Flights and baggage
Domestic flights add baggage fees. Thai AirAsia sells checked baggage for a domestic flight at THB 624 for 15 kg. Read domestic flight baggage before you pick a fare.
Not confirmed: Hotels, food and flights are not in these totals; price them on the booking site for your dates. Tourist entry fee: check the Ministry of Tourism and Sports for whether it applies on your travel dates. Check each fare with the operator before you book.
